Our Road to Net Zero

Throughout our operations, we constantly monitor how we can improve our environmental performance and provide added benefits to our clients. We investigate options to reduce waste through intelligent design and working practices, with companywide and project-based initiatives to proactively reduce our impact on the planet.

By working with our clients, we can help influence the design to use more sustainable products and solutions, reduce waste and support with advice on heating and energy systems, and resource harnessing; with a current focus on producing the necessary environmental requirements in light of the new Part L regulations.

To date, we have implemented numerous sustainable initiatives, from the use of off-site production, Modern Methods of Construction (MMC) and new technologies, to carbon off-setting through tree planting schemes, on-site allotments, and even bug-hotels.

Our initiatives employed to positively affect our environmental impact, have been developed over a number of years. The following examples demonstrate the embedded culture we have within our business to embrace a more efficient working environment.

An Embedded Approach

Our Corporate Social & Sustainability Plan

View the role we play

It’s very reassuring to see, that there is finally global traction in establishing a combined effort to tackle the world’s climate crisis. Whilst others have just now started to review their impact, we’re proud to have already embedded this approach within our business.

The pandemic undoubtedly progressed digitisation and more agile working, dramatically reducing travel, but also making us far more environmentally focused.

We fully utilise SmartWaste as our online environmental reporting tool. This was designed by the BRE to help the industry monitor and report on key environmental areas, such as waste generation and management, site waste management plans, energy and water use, sustainable timber and material supply, and carbon impacts from transport. It’s a system we have had previously trialled across larger sites, but have now fully rolled-out through the investment in digitising our operations.

In response to the Government’s Green Industrial Revolution, CO2nstructZero sets out the industry’s response to meet the Net Zero goal. Forming part of this, is the introduction of the Carbon Reduction Code for the Built Environment, allowing us to commit to reviewing our performance, publicise our annual progress, and share best practice on the processes and initiatives we establish.

Going forward, the steps we plan to take are ambitious, but achievable; and as a business that has operated for over a century, the ability to adapt and evolve is something that comes naturally to us.
