This scheme for St Albans City & District Council, saw the demolition of 2 properties at Porters Hill in Harpenden and the construction of 8no, 3 bedroom, semi-detached houses; 2no, 2 bedroom, detached bungalows; internal alterations to a further existing property; and a new entrance road to facilitate the development. Of the new properties, 4 have been retained by the council for social rent housing, with the remaining 6 sold to fund the scheme.
The houses are fitted with air source heat pumps, designed to deliver more heat energy than the electricity they consume, making it a much more efficient system for heating than gas, and with the added benefits of being low-maintenance and cheaper to operate. Further energy efficiency is offered through the installation of photovoltaic panels on all units.
