Built on the site of 2 former factories, this 100% affordable, mixed housing project provides 49 new homes, consisting of 18no, 1 and 2 bed flats, and 31no, 2, 3 and 4 bed houses. 19 of the homes will be for shared ownership, with the remainder for affordable rent.
The 2 and 3 storey scheme is of traditional build, with feature brickwork and stonework to match the existing local Victorian architecture and zinc framed dormers. Landscaped communal gardens are provided in the central courtyard and PV panels have been installed on the roofs to the flats to feed the landlord communal areas.
There were extensive underground air raid shelters and after demolition of the existing buildings, care was taken to remove the WW2 artefacts by a local Luton museum. The voids were then filled in and reinforced beams installed over prior to construction starting.
£2million of government funding was provided to Hightown Housing Association in support of this new development to bring much needed housing to Luton town. Larger properties were included, as finding accommodation for families is a particular challenge.
