Mixed development of retail, commercial and residential accommodation
This project, built in the conservation area in central Harpenden, was undertaken in two phases.
Phase one comprised the refurbishment and extension of existing retail accommodation to provide two new shop units, offices and residential accommodation. Phase two entailed the construction of a new retail unit, together with offices.
The ground works, which included piled foundations, were undertaken under the auspices of a local archaeologist, because it was thought that there may be Roman remains. The traditionally built structures comprised brick and block walls, sliding sash timber windows and pitched roofs with clay tiles. One of the retail units was leased to a local estate agent for whom Jarvis also undertook the fit-out works.
