This completely refurbished department which was designed to a high specification, started with the total strip out of the existing old 1960’s interior and is located on the ground floor of an 8 storey building.
The unit consists of a short stay 3 bedroom ward, triage and clinic rooms, 2 consultation rooms and a further 6 A&E consulting rooms, including an isolation room with ensuite bathroom, and a high-dependency step-down room for patients who have come from the resuscitation unit. In addition, 2 receptions, dirty and clean utility rooms, toilets, waiting area and storage was provided. It is decorated throughout using Whiterock Digiclad, with graphics which were designed with input from the children.
The external windows were all replaced with new suspended ceilings, chilled beam air conditioning, security and fire systems, CCTV, upgraded medical gas system, LED’s and IPS units. In the resuscitation room, a 35kg plate was fitted to the structural soffit to support medical pendant and an electrical switch over unit to ensure contribution of electrical supply, alongside acoustic upgrades which were required between resuscitation and the family/bereavement room. Special bedheads providing lighting, suction and medical gases were installed throughout.
Specific issues included old electronics boxes which had to be kept due to them still servicing other floors and there was a pneumatic communications system above the ceiling to work around as well as asbestos. Close liaison was critical with the hospital staff on numerous issues, including health & safety and IT.
