This design and build project is the second contract Jarvis has secured with the School. The project comprised the design and construction of a new science block to accommodate fourteen laboratories together with teaching facilities for Biology, Chemistry and Physics in a flexible configuration. Two preparation rooms, a staff room, a single occupancy office and a plant room complete the available space.
Energy saving and sustainability design elements have played a major part in the design. The building incorporates ground source heat pumps, natural ventilation as far as possible and automatically opening vents in the facades and roof lights. Passive heating and cooling occur throughout the thermal mass of the exposed concrete slabs, rainwater is recycled to flush WC's and energy efficient lighting was installed throughout the building, together with landscaping.
Materials were sourced for their sustainability and to be harmonious with their surroundings. Upon completion, the old science building was demolished and landscaped as green areas with pathways.
