New build crematorium
- Client: Chiltern District Council
- Contract Value: £4,300,000
- Project Duration: Nov'17 - Mar'19
- Contract Type: NEC3
- Architect: Haverstock
- Quantity Surveyor: Baqus
- Project Manager: Pick Everard
- Structural Engineer: Elliot Wood
The works comprise the tradition construction of a new single storey crematorium building with approximately 582m2 internal floor area, externally hard-landscaped areas, landscaped gardens, associated site boundary treatments and off-site highway works.
The new building has 2 distinct areas; the large chapel in which services take place, alongside a series of internal and external waiting areas, and ancillary spaces where mourners comfortably congregate in advance of their service. These are identified by a double height space, clad externally in vertical timber rainscreen cladding and a dual-pitched sedum roof.
The second area is the crematory, administration and staff facilities. The catafalque provides the interface
between the chapel and crematory, leading to the coffin transfer space. The cremators and associated
equipment are housed in a plant room adjacent to the coffin committal area. Beyond this are administration
and back of house facilities for staff and visitors. The waiting areas, porte-cochere and administration
facilities are unified by a single low roof element, and privacy is addressed through clerestory windows.
